Why I took it off my list:
I’d heard good things about this slasher horror and decided it would be the perfect film for Halloween-time viewing.
So, let’s dig in!
Review of Night of the Reaper (2025)

Night of the Reaper starts with some pleasingly retro TV-static credits. Then, the opening scenes make it very clear it’s paying homage to John Carpenter’s Halloween, as a babysitter (Summer H. Howell, soon to lead Mike Flanagan’s Carrie remake) is menaced by a skull mask-clad, knife-wielding assailant.
We then cut to Halloween-time, where teenager Dee (Jessica Clement) walks uneasily past decorations that mirror the killer’s look. She’s back in her small town from college, where’s she studying criminology.
She first visits her best friend Heddie (Savannah Miller), before reconnecting with her family, who are struggling as it’s implied Emily was Dee’s sister.
Elsewhere, the local sheriff is mailed a suspicious piece of evidence – the remote for the garage door at the house where Emily was murdered. He’s then sent a videotape marked ‘Night of the Reaper’, which shows the killer menacing and then killing a young man camping in the woods.
While re-investigating the crime scene, the sheriff finds another box with another tape, this one showing Emily on the night of her death. He begins searching the tapes for clues.
Meanwhile, things take a turn when Heddie calls Dee to tell her she’s ‘got the shits’ and talks her into taking over her babysitting duty for the night – looking after the sheriff’s kid, Max.
Somewhat predictably, the reaper shows up to terrorize Dee in the cavernous house, but things don’t go down quite as you might expect.
Enjoyably Twisty and Tension-Filled

Night of the Reaper is a fun ride. The dialogue is snappy and often quite funny throughout the film, which, along with some tension-filled set pieces, keep things engaging.
There are enough twists and turns and red herrings in the mystery of who the reaper is to keep things interesting. And one huge twist late in the game completely shakes up the status quo of the film and takes it in more of an original direction than you’d initially assume.
The villain’s motivations, once they are revealed, are a little bit shaky, but the film makes up for it with an overall satisfying conclusion.
It also boasts a talented young cast. Clement makes for an empathetic yet badass leading lady, while Miller is a hoot as the bubbly Heddie. Even child actor Max Christensen is consistently good as Max. And among the adults, Ryan Robbins (Archie’s uncle on Riverdale) is effective as the dogged sheriff.
The film is well-shot and lit, and nails the 80s aesthetic, which along with the babysitting plot, makes it feel a little like a companion piece to Ti West’s awesome House of the Devil. It also, pleasingly, shares some DNA with Adam Wingard’s You’re Next.
Final score: 7/10
